While EA's series is the highest-selling soccer series by far and the amount of time and money the company puts behind the game is unquestionable, the quality has been lacking. One is EA's FIFA series, developed in Canada, and other is, of course, Konami's ISS, developed in Japan. In the recent years, there's only been two notable soccer series. That may have been true during the Amiga period when Jon Hare and Dino Dini wrote Sensible Soccer and Kick Off, both hugely influential hit titles back in the day.

You'd think that with all the soccer history behind it, Europeans would be coming out with the best soccer games. It's easily on its way to surpass the combined sales of both ZOE and Shadow of Memories (Shadow of Destiny in the US) which proves just how valuable the series is for Konami. Now after being out on the Japanese market for a few weeks, the game has already notched up impressive sales of over 200,000 units. Having consistently sold more than 400,000 units per version in Japan, the WE series is a very important one for Konami. Known to have been in the works for the better part of last year, Winning Eleven 5 has created an incredible amount of anticipation.

Winning Eleven 5 on most accounts is a superb re-creation of soccer in videogame form, even though it's more of an PS2 version of Winning Eleven 2000 rather than a full-on PS2 sequel. Patience is a virtue, however, and KCE Tokyo's WE team lead by "Seabass" Takatsuka has blessed gamers with Winning Eleven 5. It hasn't helped that these games have been released under ISS the moniker over in Europe and many who were waiting for an 128-bit update on ISS Pro Evolution were severely disappointed upon booting up ISS 2000. The series has been a Nintendo mainstay but with the advent of the PlayStation 2, Konami's already released three revisions of Perfect Striker in Japan, all which have been disappointing - especially for importing European gamers who are very much used to the KCE Tokyo developed Winning Eleven/ISS Pro series. The latter is being developed by Konami's Osaka Studios and Major A. Perhaps Konami's most consistent game-series over the years, Winning Eleven (known as the ISS Pro series outside Japan) finally made its debut on PlayStation 2 after several mediocre incarnations of Konami's other soccer series Perfect Striker.
